Charmed
Music has always been in my life. My family is very musical, and you can say that we’re “in the biz” – though, I’m not talking about that kind of music biz. No, our specialty is more in the realm of concert bands and orchestras and is more of an academic pursuit primarily.
I’ve never really been focused on singing, especially not to the degree that I am now. No, once Shelyn was in my life - that was always going to be her. She had the most warm, soulful voice, that you’d just be fascinated by the acoustics of it and certainly was unique from other vocalists I’d ever heard. My point though is that I wasn’t supposed to be the singer. That was her. No, I’d play piano, maybe guitar or drums if she wanted to play keys. So, now I try to emulate her voice in a way. To honor what could have been.
You can consider me a producer, or composer, or singer songwriter – I am kind of all of those, I think. I’m bad with labels so I tend to just stick with musician. Voxie Sarenrae – musician.
My degree was in music composition – and actually I’ve been composing music now in the realm of two decades. Still not going to tell you my age though
So yeah, with my family’s focus of classical academic music –you’d be more likely to hear me write a post-modern minimalist symphony than you would anything like a song. Considering this, let’s just say if you’re one who finds my current music to be odd – I’ll recommend you steer clear of my other work!
I guess my point here is that I am familiar with the language of music. Sure, I break a lot of the rules – but I think of it as one of those things in art, where once you sort of understand the standard ruleset for things, you’ll naturally tend to want to break it and find new ways to explore the possibilities in the medium.
Now I certainly do not mean that I know how to make it in the music industry, (clearly) nor that I know how to be successful with such music (clearly)! Nor does it mean that it will be good! This is all pretty evident so far - so I guess I am just going to wrap it up by saying thank you for joining me on this journey where I have some of the tools, but no map, no GPS. But…let’s keep going anyway.
